Fourth of July Blast!!

  • Jul. 5th, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Thanks to everyone who showed to the party, I hope it was to everyones standards. (Except Troys cause he showed up late, again...) A nice showing of people. 25. Thanks to the few who donated. 4.

I was expecting a bit more from people last night. I understand that I shouldn't expect it due to the fact that I was hosting, but as I said it is quite expensive to host such a party, and all of you know that.

Here are the numbers. Total spent: $300. My money I was willing to front as my own: $100. I was expecting around 20 people at the party. 20 people, $200 = 10 Dollars a person. Simple and cheap. We had more than 20 people making it even easier for people who might be in a situation. (how much is cover at clubs, events, movies, or concerts nowadays?)

This is a party I like to do and have fun doing. The clean up alone is a pain in the ass but the show was worth it. And I hope people think of the Fourth as a tradition and understand that I want to keep it that way with a certain quality.

p.s. And thanks to the people who brought food and drink.

4th of July

1) I ended up at a houseboat on lake union... the closest I've ever been to the barge where the firework was set up. All I can say is wow. Everything is so BIG (yes, I'm a size queen) and loud. It's one extra buzz factor to actually feel the explosion of firework in your body.

2) Don't expect to be able to hail a cab after the firework. The line was busy and no one's picking up. While it's nice to not have to look for parking and one can drink massive amount of alcohol, waiting for 2+ hours for a cab is not so much fun.

3) Beef stew noodle soup at a Vietnamese restaurant WITH FREE WIFI connection. Oh how I love Seattle.

Canada </3 America </3 Britain

Ok so yesterday's post was all for loving America! Wooo! But a few comments in recent comics have reminded me how much I love old political cartoons, and now I am making a post about that. Unfortunately for you, America, this means you are out of luck! Little did you know, because you don't give two damns about Canada ever, but we care lots and lots about you. We know all about you! We also think you are out to get us. Allow me to show you a thing or two.

CELEBRITY DEATH TOLL UPDATE

Jesse Helms

Famous for:
  • Being the first publicly elected Republican U.S. senator from North Carolina.
  • Becoming known as "Senator No" for his continuous votes against civil rights, gay rights, abortion and letting black kids ride the same school bus as white kids.
  • Being the titular subject of the documentary "Dear Jesse," in which the filmmaker — a boy who likes boys — writes a "love letter" to Helms.
  • I will always remember Helms as the guy who I swear to Jesus sang "Dixie" while in an elevator with a black woman — then-Illinois Senator Carol Moseley Braun — with the sole intention of making her cry.
  • That was in the year 1993.
  • Getting re-elected four times, including twice after the year 1993.
Cause of death:
  • jaems bond kilt senator no
  • "Natural causes." Bullshit. The Grim Reaper wears black. Coincidence? I think not.
Age:
  • 86

Independence Day 2008
Happy Independence Day America! Remember that the people that made up the Declaration of Independence were alive today, they would probably declare independence from what most of America has become.

There is a new Comicmix interview with the Bird Flu about the Freak Angels web comic! He also says he likes me. Hooray!

There is a New Wigu Comic about body thetans.

Randomness

  • Jul. 4th, 2008 at 5:08 PM

Here's a random update about what's going on in my world:

-- Those commercials bringing together Hellboy with James Lipton, the American Gladiators, and Chuck are truly delightful and creative. I can't wait to see that movie next week.

-- The more Bette Davis movies I watch, the more I want to build a shrine to her in my apartment and invite people over to worship at it. The Anniversary just may be her best movie ever, as it manages to shove all the bitchiness found in an entire season of Gossip Girl into a mere 95 minutes. The immortal Ms. Davis plays a fabulously bitchy old grandmother with an eyepatch who invites her three sons (one of whom is a panty-snatching crossdresser) and their women over for a night of beratement and awesome put downs.

[info]laserboy, if you have not seen this, SEE IT NOW. Same goes for everyone else.

-- Saw WALL*E yesterday and loved it. It's not quite up there with Brad Bird's Pixar combo of The Incredibles and Ratatouille, but excellent nonetheless. Also loved Wanted quite a bit, despite the huge changes from the comics. James McAvoy needs to call me.

-- I'm quite excited that the website I work for is launching a movie section soon, and I've been writing dozens of movie reviews so the site has content when it goes live. It's exhausting, but insanely fun. Soon I should be a critic on Rotten Tomatoes and get to go to early press screenings and whatnot. Woo!

-- With no TV to watch during the summer aside from Wipeout and So You Think You Can Dance, I've decided to give Mad Men another shot. I wasn't impressed when I watched about an episode and a half when it first premiered, but obviously I was brain damaged back then because now I think it's amazingly good. While my mind is open and I'm willing to own up to my poor judgment, I'm thinking of giving Dexter another chance as well. Maybe it's not as dull as I remember.

-- Because guys with accents are ridiculously hot, I need more porn featuring UK and Australian men. Anyone know a good free resource for such a thing?

Sweet Freedom

Not that Nova Scotia (which at the time was both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick together) didn't try to go make themselves Americans back in the day because some totally did.

On the other hand, you could take this comic as John Campbell's words becoming true.

Happy Independence Day, America!

I should be heading to bed, but I don't know how many more entries I'll be able to post before the world ends.
Life is pretty good. Everyone likes me at work, which still feels new and wonderful even after seven months. I'm making slow progress on the second draft of my book... mostly simply wishing I took my own advice more. My Communications teacher told me last winter that I have a surgically precise understanding of the text material, but a fuzzier functional grasp. My difficulty was in actually applying the knowledge. It's true for more of life than just night school. I met with Pastor Carpenter on Tuesday... I suppose I should just call him Matt now. He's still my Pastor, in my heart. He had wisdom for me. Coffee still tastes bad, though. I never remember to order a mocha.
I only watch three television shows: The Daily Show, American Gladiators, and So You Think You Can Dance. The third one I would describe as a guilty pleasure except I don't really feel guilty. So I guess it's just a pleasure. I miss dancing... I miss feeling good at it. It's nice to enjoy it vicariously, even if it does give me antsy feet all the next day. I watched some old episodes of Night Court on YouTube and it was refreshing to remember that there was a time when sitcoms actually had clever dialogue without non-stop sex references. Alas, those days are behind us.
I haven't written any new songs for a month. It's been much more satisfying to bury myself in the music of other people. Eels, White Stripes, Cloud Cult... I'm tired of hearing my own voice behind my guitar. My lyrics hold no new truth for me.
I'm glad the world is ending. I'm glad I get to be here for it. If something terrible happens to me before Saturday night I'll be ever so disappointed.

Octopus Pie: We're easy to please.

July 4th, 2008 ::

Happy 4th, US Americans! Hope you have a great day.

Personally, I will be at my studio 'til late in the evening, celebrating my favorite part about this country -- that I can run my own business and do the work I love. :)

A few nice people in the forum are posting comic transcriptions. I plan to use these on the site to make the comics more searchable, so if you're bored of hamburgers and potato salad, please contribute!
